Region 6: Kern & Kings
The CAP forecast is valid for the state of California. However, we can estimate regional precipitation forecasts by applying the statewide forecast (90-110% of normal) to the regional precipitation averages. For Region 6 (Kern and Kings) 90-110% of normal equates to 20.46” to 25.01”.
Please note: This month's calculations are based on only five stations, so actual values may differ from those reported.
When we look at NWS data for Region 6 (KTKK) with only 5 stations reporting, this region was at 77.2% of water year normal through the end of March, receiving 6.72” during the month of March to finish at 17.54”. This boost represented a gain of almost 30 percentage points in the month of March! You may recall that last month, all of the reporting stations were on the dry side of the precipitation distribution for the state. However, after a relatively wet March, 3 of the 5 stations are now on the “wet” side. The average % increase for March was an impressive 30.63%, exceeding the median increase of 14.97% for the 110 reporting stations across the state. Lake Success Dam had the highest increase in precipitation percentage for the region, gaining a whopping 45.05 percentage points.
