Statewide Dashboard
Following a slightly below normal water year in 2023-24, California will be looking ‘average’ in water year 2024-25. The California Annual Precipitation (CAP) forecast indicates water year precipitation will be 90-110% of normal.
The dashboard below shows the Statewide status with National Weather Service data through October 31. You will recall from the forecast release that the NWS precipitation data acquisition/quality control process can take several weeks, so the dashboard below does not include any November precipitation data.

Year-over-Year Comparison
Highlights
- After a dry and hot summer, October followed suit, with the state as a whole receiving just 0.27” of accumulation during the first month of the water year, just shy of 1% of the average total water year accumulation.
- Through October, the accumulated precipitation is tracking closely with the accumulation curves for the analog years we identified in our previous forecast—2017-18 and 2018-19 (see Insights section for more information).
- Forecast indices suggest the water year will likely be somewhat drier in the southern regions (relative to percentage of total water year precipitation) compared to the northern regions. Additionally, should the total water year observed precipitation fall outside of our forecast range, the model indices indicate that the more probable deviation would be toward greater precipitation rather than less.
